چکیده

Heavy ion tracks in polymer membranes can be transformed into microand nano-channels by means of wet-chemical etching. Up to now most commonly polycarbonate (PC), polyethylene therephthalate (PET) and polyimide (PI) membranes were employed for this purpose. For some applications such as proton conductive membranes for fuel cells, high resistance of the material against heat and solvents as well as good electric insulation are required. Among the polymeric materials, polyetheretherketone (PEEK) exhibits all the properties mentioned above. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that the surface of PEEK can be chemically modified, using hydroxyl groups as a starting point [1]. Applying this kind of surface chemistry inside etched nanochannels would allow the introduction of additional functionality in the PEEK membrane.

SHI induced nano track polymer filters and characterization

Swift heavy ion irradiation produces damage in polymers in the form of latent tracks. Latent tracks can be enlarged by etching it in a suitable etchant and thus nuclear track etch membrane can be formed for gas permeation / purification in particular for hydrogen where the molecular size is very small. By applying suitable and controlled etching conditions well defined tracks can be formed for ...

Preparation of ion-track membranes of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide)

There have been numerous studies on ion-track membranes of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and polycarbonate (PC), which are easily prepared by ion beam irradiation and subsequent alkaline etching. More importantly, the ion-track membranes of chemically and thermally stable polyimide (PI) and polyamide (PA), with controlled pore shape and size, may be required for the design of materials tha...

Characterization of track-etched membranes by small-angle x-ray scattering

Track-etched membranes are polymer foils irradiated with swift heavy ions and subsequently wet-etched to create pores by dissolving defects formed along the ion trajectories. Under suitable conditions, the resulting pores are of cylindrical shape and uniform in size. Such membranes are commonly used for filtration or as templates for nanowires, grown inside the pores, e.g., by electrochemical d...

Preparation of anisotropically proton-conductive materials based on poly(vinylidene fluoride) ion track membranes

Proton exchange membranes (PEMs) for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) have recently been developed by our original techniques of the γ-ray or electron-beam crosslinking and graft polymerization. Our additional main focus is the use of cylindrical damage in polymers produced by bombardment of high-energy ions, that is called a latent track. We are taking the approach using this ion track t...

High-sensitivity ion track-etching of poly(vinylidene fluoride) membranes

Quite recently, ion-track membranes of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) have attracted a renewed interest for their applications to next-generation electrochemical devices such as fuel cells [1,2]. In order to produce tracketched pores in PVDF films, several kinds of etching solutions were previously employed. In most cases [3], a highly concentrated aqueous KOH solution with a KMnO4 additive w...
